Journal History

The previous name of the journal – «Photodynamic therapy and photodiagnosis».

The «Photodynamic therapy and photodiagnosis» journal was founded in 2012 initiated by FSI «P.A. Herzen MCRI » of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, as first Russian specialized periodical edition for publication of results of investigations in the field of photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photodiagnosis (PD). One of the leading expert in the clinical application of PD and PDT in Russia, the professor E.V. Filonenko became the editor-in-chief.

Since 2000s the development of PD and PDT in Russia has been characterized by intensive expansion, consistent growing interest among specialists of different medical professions, improving of hospital implementation with necessary equipment, forthcoming of new photosensitizers on pharmaceutical market, increase of  credibility of patients to mentioned methods. From year to year the number of patients successfully treated with PD and PDT increased. The number of thesis research defended in the field of PD and PDT increased constantly. Only in 2011-2012 there were 20 Ph.D. theses and 6 doctoral dissertations.

All these factors determined the need for creation of specialized journal for specialists in the phield of PDT and PD.

For 3 years after creation the journal found wide popularity among Russian specialists in the phield of PDT and PD. The number of manuscripts in editor’s hand and their quality and geographic variety increased annually, the interest of scientific community deepened: specialists getting acquainted with the journal at conferences were actively interested in the journal and sent manuscripts for publication. The submission of interesting manuscripts with results of experimental and clinical studies in allied fields of biomedical photonics to the editorial board of the journal started.

PD and PDT methods have much in common with other methods of laser medicine.  The similarity of its mechanisms, approaches and directions of development served as prerequisite for change of journal’s conception and expansion of field of covered issues.

Since 2015 the journal has received name of «Biomedical Photonics» and expanded its scope to all issues of biomedical photonics.

The editorial board of the refined journal includes physicists, biologists, chemists and clinicians of different specialties, four foreign leading experts.

Currently the «Biomedical Photonics» journal highlights recent advances of Russian and foreign researchers in the field of topic issues for clinical application of all medical lasers (including for PD, PDT), clinical and experimental studies in this area, development and approval of new laser devices for medical use and also of search, synthesis and study of new agents for laser medicine (predominately, photosensitizers for PD and PDT).
